Behind the Curtain: Artistic Director, Elizabeth Durand, shares insights on our commitment to high-quality productions and fair compensation for our artists:

Dear Theatre Aezir Patrons,

I’ve received some feedback regarding ticket prices for The Minutes, and I completely understand that times are challenging with inflation affecting us all. Rest assured, we’ve carefully considered these factors, as well as feedback from patrons like you.

Last March, after Marion Bridge, many of you shared that our ticket prices felt reasonable and aligned with other theaters. With The Minutes, we’re thrilled to bring you a cast of eleven talented performers, including Equity actors, and a dedicated team of professional designers and backstage experts. Since transitioning from community to professional theatre in 2023 with The Phoenix Lottery, Theatre Aezir has been committed to delivering the highest quality productions, where artists are fairly compensated for their work.

This shift marks a new era for Theatre Aezir, and we believe the caliber of our productions reflects this. Your continued support allows us to sustain and grow this vision, and we’re grateful to have you with us on this journey. Thank you for being an essential part of Theatre Aezir’s story.

Elizabeth Durand – Producer

I am so happy to be producing and acting again. The early part of my career was spent singing in small opera companies in Northern California. I attended Western and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. My favourite roles would be Mimi in La Boheme, Freia in Das Rheingold, Charlotte in Moon Over Buffalo and Pierre Valliere in Sixty-Seven for AlvegoRoot Theatre. Last year I eliminated my side lawn and turned it into a vegetable garden with four large galvanized steel raised beds and a topiary of a bull.

Tracy Letts & His Generation 🎭✨

Tracy Letts holds a distinctive place in the pantheon of American playwrights, emerging as a leading voice in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He is often associated with a cohort of playwrights who played a key role revitalizing American theatre during this period, bringing a fresh intensity and raw honesty to the stage. Letts’s August: Osage County, a gritty, family-centered drama, earned him both the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award and remains one of the era’s defining works.

Letts and his contemporaries, including Tony Kushner, Sarah Ruhl, and David Lindsay-Abaire, introduced a style that paved the way for younger playwrights by blending realism with dark humour and tackling themes of societal and familial dysfunction. In doing so, Letts’s work serves as a bridge between the postmodern, often experimental plays of the 1990s and today’s more intimate, character-driven stories from emerging voices like Annie Baker and Samuel D. Hunter.

This generation of playwrights has had a profound influence on those who followed, especially in their portrayals of nuanced, flawed characters and their commitment to exploring difficult emotional landscapes with authenticity and a critical eye. As part of a group of mid-career playwrights, Letts helped set a new standard for realism and emotional rawness that continues to shape the landscape of American theatre.

My thanks to Elizabeth, Mike, and the fabulous Theatre Aezir for the opportunity to join this creative company in Tracy Letts’ brilliant play “The Minutes”.  I dedicate this performance to Doug – to whom I shall be forever grateful.
