“It’s among the best new plays on Broadway in years” – Variety
Theatre Aezir is an independent theatre company. We produce high quality professional productions of new plays and well-loved ones. We just completed our latest performance called Marion Bridge by Daniel McIvor in March 2024. It was a resounding success!
In 2017 we performed the Canadian premiere of A Permanent Image, Samuel D. Hunter’s exploration of family dysfunction and suicide wrapped around the big bang theory. In 2019 we produced The Laramie Project and Falling: A Wake. The Laramie Project, a verbatim theatre piece, was developed by Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theatre project to solemnize the life of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was murdered in Laramie.
Falling: A Wake, by Canadian Gary Kirkham, was also inspired by an horrific international event. It’s a haunting and surprisingly funny play about love, loss, and the redemptive power of letting go. The COVID pandemic interrupted many plans, and we suffered as well. I feel as if we are starting over.
In 2023 we mounted the Allan Stratton comedy, A Phoenix Lottery with an all-professional cast and crew. Truly our best effort to date. Please check our past productions pages for more information and reviews.
Just in case you’re new to Theatre Aezir, a special welcome to you and if you’re an old friend, we’re excited you’re here and to share a glimpse into the heart and soul of Theatre Aezir. Our motto, ‘theatre that makes you think,’ guides everything we do. Our mission is to challenge your intellect, excite your emotions, and confront the present in a way that’s quirky, edgy, and provocative.
The question of “Why we do what we do?” is easy to answer. We do it because it’s our passion and our love. We have a burning desire to tell a story, to portray someone else’s pain or joy hoping that the audience will be inspired, soothed or transported. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to create an unseen realm, dare I say something magical out of an empty space.
We believe in the power of theatre to bring people together, to spark curiosity, and to inspire meaningful conversations. We seek to create art that has the potential to unite us in a world that often seeks to divide.
Stay tuned for more thought-provoking productions and events from Theatre Aezir.
